Welcome to Das Porsche 944 Turbo Garage

If you are a Porsche 944 enthusiast as I am, I hope this will become a source of information for you. I invite you to visit the other side of My Porsche Garage.

When I bought my first Porsche it was this one, but I new very little about the car except that it was nimble and fast. With this in mind for you newbies you need to be formally introduced. First lets get acquainted with some history and pedigree of our Porsche 944 (951)Turbo. The pedigree of the Porsche 944 (951) Turbo begins in 1976 with the introduction of the Porsche 924 which was originally an Audi project, designed for the VW/Audi company. The car was marketed in the United States as the Porsche 924 and in Europe as an Audi Coup. Production of the Porsche 944 began in 1982 and continued until 1991, and was the replace in 1992 by the Porsche 968. In the 944, Porsche installed a new all alloy 2.5 L straight-4 engine that was in theory half of the Porsche 928’s 5.0 L V8 even though some part were interchangeable.

The Porsche 944 Turbo was introduced in 1985 and known by Porsche as the 951. The 951 had the standard car’s engine except that it was now a turbocharged and intercooler version and boasted 217 HP in the US imported version. In 1988 Porsche unveiled the 944 Turbo S which had a more powerful engine at 247 HP.

In the nine years that Porsche produced the 944 it only went through 3 production changes, in 1985 the 944 (951) Turbo, 1987 the 944S, 1989 the 944S2, then in 1991 the 944 Turbo Cabriolet was released. The final step in the 944 production line was to be the 944S3 which was to become the Porsche 968.

My first Porsche was a 1988 951 that I bought in 1997. I had always promised my family that when the kids were on their own daddy was going to by himself a new toy. Along with the purchase of My 951 came a world of new experiences. Now I had to join the PCA (Porsche Club of America) where I was introduced not only to a great group of people but all kinds of information about my car. When I became interested in going to PCA Region sponsored Driver Education Events you learn to drive as fast as you want on some of the greatest race tracks in the country. Now I got into another level of interest in my car, performance. At this level I began learning about all kind of new things from safety (helmets, harness bars, roll cages, 5 point harness and driving equipment) to suspension enhancement and tires to performance enhancement such as computer chips, turbos and how they work. Being pretty much a do it yourselfer I was now getting magazines and publications about Porsches and buying a new set of tools to install all of those parts and enhancements. Well needless to say I did it, I do it, and I still have a lot of fun with it.

One last recommendation, in maintenance, modification or Porsche restoration, there is a large Porsche parts aftermarket. In your search for the right Porsche part consider first OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts first.
